Test Results

Results are usually available after approx 5-7 working days. Please telephone 01792 581666 outside peak times between 2:00-4:00pm. If you telephone at our peak times you may be asked to call back.

To maintain confidentiality, results are only given to the patient or if appropriate parent or guardian. The results may not always be disclosed over the telephone, particularly if the Doctor wishes to speak to you personally or if an appointment is required.

Your GP Cluster

The Penderi Cluster is a group of six GP Practices that have come together in order to share services, expertise and pool resources for the local community. The six Surgeries consist of – Brynhyfryd, Cheriton, Cwmfelin, Fforestfach and Manselton. You can register as a patient, and/or access a range of community based support locally. Penderi Cluster have a vision to care for the unique health and wellbeing needs of its patients and citizens in the most effective way possible. In recognition of its particular population needs, it will also work together to create an innovative culture of enabling long term change by taking a preventative approach to tackling ill health and its contributing factors.

GP Clusters are a consortium of GP Practices situated in a close geographical area. They look at local health and wellbeing needs and issues. They explore what can be done to improve health and wellbeing in its community, within their working capacity. Clusters work collaboratively with a range of health, social care and voluntary sector professionals.

Clusters will:

Focus on preventing ill health, enabling people to keep themselves well and independent for as long as possible.
Develop the range and quality of services that are provided in the community.
Ensure services provided by a wide range of health and social care professionals in the community are better co-ordinated to local needs.
Improve communication and information sharing between different health, social care and voluntary sector professionals.
Facilitate closer working between community based and hospital services, ensuring that patients receive a smooth and safe transition from hospital services to community based services and vice versa.

Clinics & Services

Health Promotion Clinics and Other Medical Services

Various clinics, previously detailed are held on a regular basis and include:

Child Health - At each clinic there is a Health Visitor who will provide guidance and support regarding child care as well as general health information. A Doctor is also present to carry out developmental assessments. The clinic is a well baby clinic and if a child is unwell, they should be seen by their Doctor.

Antenatal
Diabetic - We aim to achieve good control of diabetes and prevent complications by providing regular check ups and education. The clinics are run on a monthly basis for annual reviews. The clinic is run with the assistance of a Practice Nurse, Doctor, Chiropodist and Dietician.
Cryotherapy Clinic

Family Planning

All Doctors will offer confidential advice during normal surgery times on all aspects of contraception. Coil fitting is available.

Emergency Contraception

For emergency contraception advice, you need to see a doctor as soon as possible, and not more than 72 hours after having unprotected sex.

Phlebotomy Blood tests

The Phlebotomist will take blood samples only on a Monday and Friday morning. To qualify for this service, patients must be either Diabetic or over 70 years old.

Adult Immunisations and Vaccinations

Please contact the Practice Nurse for advice and vaccination against Influenza, Tetanus, Travel and Holidays.

Flu Vaccinations

These are available each autumn for people over 65 and those with certain medical conditions such as chronic (long-term) chest problems, diabetes and heart disease.

Travel Immunisations

The practice nurses can give advice on immunisations for travel abroad. Please arrange an appointment well before your travel date.

Cervical Smear Tests

It is recommended that all women between the ages of 20 and 65 years have a cervical smear test every three years. You will receive a reminder from the All Wales Cytology Service when your smear is due and it is important that you attend for regular smear tests. Appointments specified as cervical smear requests can be made with the Practice Nurse.

If you do not wish to receive an invitation for a smear you will need to contact the All Wales Cytology Service, 36 Orchard St, Swansea Tel: 458066 and also ask us for a form to complete to exclude you from our recall.

Minor Operations

The Doctors carry out minor surgery in our well equipped treatment room. Such surgery includes the removal of cysts and warts and is usually arranged in consultation with your Doctor.

Joint Injections

There are doctors in the practice able to provide more specialist care. After routine assessment, if appropriate, the doctor can offer joint injections to relieve discomfort.

Mental Health Liaison Nurse

Community based Mental Health Liaison Nurse is based at the Medical Centre. She is linked to the Psychiatry service. Referrals are made by the Doctors.

Access Standards

A new set of standards were announced by the Minister for Health and Social Services in March 2019 that are aimed to raise and improve the level of service for patients in Wales from their GP practices.

The standards are:

· People receive a prompt response to their contact with a GP practice via telephone.

· Practices have the appropriate telephony systems in place to support the needs of people avoiding the need to call back multiple times and will check that they are handling calls in this way.

· People receive bilingual information on local and emergency services when contacting a practice.

· People are able to access information on how to get help and advice.

· People receive the right care at the right time in a joined up way which is based on their needs.

· People can use a range of options to contact their GP practice.

· People are able to email a practice to request a non-urgent consultation or a call back.

· Practices understand the needs of people within their practice and use this information to anticipate the demand on its services.

Travel Vaccinations

If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required.

It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.

Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.

Sick Notes

Sick notes are NOT an emergency. Please plan ahead and contact the surgery BEFORE your sick note expires.

You do not require a doctor's sickness certificate for any illness lasting seven days or less. Your employer may however require you to complete a self-certification form (SC2) which is available from your employer or on the HMRC website. If you require an SC2 from the surgery we charge £1.

Evidence that you are sick

If you are sick for more than seven days, your employer can ask you to give them some form of medical evidence to support payment of SSP (statutory sick pay).

It is up to your employer to decide whether you are incapable of work. A medical certificate, now called a 'Statement of Fitness for Work’ (see below) from your doctor is strong evidence that you are sick and would normally be accepted, unless there is evidence to prove otherwise.

You could also provide evidence from someone who is not a medical practitioner, e.g. a dentist. Your employer will decide whether or not this evidence is acceptable. If your employer has any doubts, they may still ask for a medical certificate from your GP.

Statement of Fitness for Work - ’Fit Note'

The 'fit note' was introduced on 6 April 2010. With your employer's support, the note will help you return to work sooner by providing more information about the effects of your illness or injury.

Disabled Access

The surgery has facilities for the disabled, including designated parking spaces, disabled toilets, ramp entrance and a hearing loop.

If you park in one of the disabled parking spaces please display your Blue Badge.

Should any patient with hearing, visual or any other disability require assistance please contact our reception staff before your visit.

The practice is committed to improving disabled access and a bid has been placed with Welsh Government for an improvement grant for enhanced access and power assisted entrance doors. This is not guaranteed but we will keep you informed of its progress.

Non-NHS Services

Some services provided are not covered under our contract with the NHS and therefore attract charges. Examples include the following:

Medicals for pre-employment, sports and driving requirements (HGV, PSV etc.)
Insurance claim forms
Prescriptions for taking medication abroad
Private sick notes
Vaccination certificates

The fees charged are based on the British Medical Association (BMA) suggested scales and our reception staff will be happy to advise you about them along with appointment availability.
